Whale watching without the whales

On Saturday we fell into the tourist trap and took ourselves Whale Watching from Reykjavik Harbour. It was a gray cloudy day, hardly photogenic, but I thought the weather might get harsher every week and by October it might be sheer folly to even think of sailing.

The boat was brimming with people, we were the last ones to enter. The first half an hour was OK, then came the currents and we had to hold on to the railings with white knuckles. Paper bags were distributed, and very few had the curiosity left to even look for signs of the species. Most of us had enough in concentrating on how to return to land in one piece. For someone mainly used to Silja and Viking Line type of sailing, this was truly an exercise in extreme sports.

The cruise took three hours and no sight of even dolphins. In such a case of misfortune, the company gives complimentary tickets valid for two years. This year, they offer this until the end of October. Some of the whales will have swum to warmer waters by then. But we'll be here. I could try again on a day when the ocean's surface is milky white calm.

PS: Why no photos? Sheer laziness. We have a camera here. It's already my third cheap digital one, the two previous cheap ones have got broken in my bag. I agree that an Iceland blog requires photos. Mañana, mañana...
